My New Life
I am packing up to move to another place. I am going to move in May. I have been in this house for seven years . I lived in this house for most of my time in the USA. I moved to the US to look forward to better education for my son. My packed boxes remind me of the past. The immigrant was not an easy way to live a better life, for it was not easy to adopt the culture and the way that the people behave in the U.S.
I met my husband when I moved here and I was struggling with this new life. It had been three months since I left Korea. His name is Hyun Kim. He is five years older than me. My first impression was good. He was quiet and shy. He worked at the post office. It was stable work. Most of all, he had a pure heart that wanted to give help to us.It was very lucky and I was thankful. He helped to get a room, to get a job and so on. We got married and wemoved to Connedicut from New York because he was working in Stamford in Conneticut. After we got married, he offered me to make a green card. We had to show a lot of documents to prove a real marriage. He shared all my work from start to finish. Finally, I got a green card and then five years later, I acquired American citizenship. I prayed to God, "Thank you God really really."
I had to get a driver's license. There were not much public transportation in Connecticut. I used to walk 20~30 minutes with heavy bags and I had to go to work on foot. It took a long time to get there on foot. In Korea, I didn't need to drive because the public transportation was pretty well developed. I could get anywhere I wanted. I had a driver's licence but I didn't need to use it. But, I had to take a new license in the US. I took driving lessons for eight hours in driving school. Also, I practiced to learn the rules of the road. I took a driver's license test in Norwalk. That was the my first driver's license test in the US. However, I failed due to language. I couldn't understand what it said. The inspector's English was strange. The second test, I failed again. I had to borrow a car because my car had a problem that morning. I was not used to the different car. I couldn't park exactly in the parking test. It was very flurried. Fortunately, I got it on the third test. I was really happy.
I've worked in a nail salon as a nail technician since I came in the US. Most Koreans run a nail salon because nail salon work is inexpensive and doesn't' require high English ability. Also, the work hours tend to be flexible. Those were good things for me. On my first day at work, I dressed up. I wore a silk suit and dress shoes. It was really funny looking. I didn't have any knowledge and experience in nail salons. It was a physical job. It was better to wear casual clothes instead of formal business attire. It was really hard to work with different personalities, appearance, and culture. Also, I spent a large part of the day surrounded by chemicals. Sometimes, I scratched the itchy arms all day due to the chemical allergy. On a busy day, I didn't have lunch break even for 15 minutes. I cried with my face put into pillow every night. It was my first time for such hard physical work for me. However, I have to endure hardship in my life. I still work in the same job. I am not a beginner any more, I am an expert in my work.
Sometimes, I recall those days. When I came to the US, it was a gloomy future and desolate life. However, after 8 years, I've changed a lot. I qualified as a the united states citizen and I am able to drive anywhere. Also, I began to English study in school for a better job and life. I am planing to buy a new my home in two years. Hopefully, I will get good things if I keep working hard. I believe in the power and strength of love for my family.
